Drinking every night and scoffing all those late night kebabs may seem like a brilliant idea at the time, but it's not hard to understand why the average fresher puts on 10lb in the first year. So if you want to keep your student lifestyle and your waist size, then we'd recommend doing as much as you can to keep fit and healthy whilst at university.
Fitness
If there's a particular sport you'd like to get involved with, then fresher's week is the time to do it. All of the university sports teams will have stands at the freshers fair, so go along and see how you can get involved.
If you prefer your activity a little less regimented, then there are ample opportunities for exercising on a budget in manchester. Up in Fallowfield, the Armitage Centre is in the middle of the student community and offers first rate sporting facilities for team sports, as well as a great (and cheap!) rota of fitness and aerobic classes. Check out the website for more details.
On Oxford Road you'll find both the Sugden Sports Centre and the Manchester Aquatics Centre - with its Olympic size swimming pool.
The Sugden Sports centre is part of the university and offers ridiculously cheap classes (£3 each) and sports facilities. At the Aquatics Centre meanwhile, you can enjoy great swimmimng facilities and aqua aerobics classes, as well as a drop-in gym and loads of classes.
And of course, don't underestimate the power of free exercise. As a student you'll be doing plenty of walking - with the distance between Fallowfield and the Universities being a manageable couple of miles. And in rush hour, it's often a quicker option than the bus!
Health
In terms of health, you'll probably want to register with a doctor in Manchester. There are plenty of GPs located close to the university and main student living areas, as well as an NHS drop in centre at Picadilly train station and a large hospital (St Mary's) with an A&E department very close to the university.
