Review of Sessions @ Excellar Presents Elles Bailey
A fine night's entertainment at Excellar with an opening set from Jamie Freeman, who gave us solo acoustic versions of much of his new album "Dreams About Falling", including a couple of lovely duets on "Down Range" and "The Fire" (inspired by Grenfell Towers) with Elles Bailey; he's well worth checking out. Then Elles and Joe Wilkins took to the stage for a stripped-back duo set, some with both her keyboards and his guitar, some just solo guitar and smoky vocals. Some gems on offer, including the unreleased "Walk On Water", lovely reworkings of full band numbers "Little Piece Of Heaven", "What's The Matter With You" and "Help Somebody" with some stunning guitar playing from Joe, and some less-often played songs like "Time's A Healer" and "Leiper's Fork" and John Prine's "Angel From Montgomery". Sometimes less really is more.
A lovely evening and a nice intimate (and sold out) venue with good food and company. But you know it's going to be a good one when you find the band sitting at your table when you arrive!
