Review of XSLF LIVE on The Barge | May
Excellent show with 2 acts on a barge — great ambience and entertainment. Friendly staff went out of their way to get me an alcohol-free beer. The bands were mega—openers The Hoakers are a tight original 3-piece Belfast punk 'supergroup' if you will. Well worth it for this band alone. The XSFX was the headliner and they did not disappoint — Henry Cluney's version of SLF is every bit as valid and authentic as the more popular Jake Burns SLF and probably channels the strident punk-y roots of the band/music more poignantly than the SLF version. I'm speaking as one who saw SLF in 1982, so know what the original line-up was like. Not to detract from JB's SLF, who are great too!
One slight issue was the sound, the PA is very bright and consists of a line array, which is probably not the best design for such a small room—a pair of warm full-range speakers would probably work better in there. Having said that, i've not heard non-punk acts over that PA, so maybe it just is not suited to loud punky music and more set up for jazz/cabaret.
I look forward to more Barge shows as it is a unique and special venue and seems accepting of a wide range of musical styles.
