Review of Dr John Cooper Clarke - The I Wanna Be Yours Tour

A rollercoaster of an evening but in the end absolutely brilliant. After an inebriated swaying start punctuated with lengthy microphone mishaps things began by about his third poem when he became articulate, hilarious, inciteful and hugely entertaining. You knew you were in the presence of a genius and it was so exciting to hear him reciting live with the pace, energy and passion as the day he first wrote them. He did a lot of newer stuff that was as good if not better than the older stuff, told tales, cracked jokes and reminisced. He's still controversial, making you think and question his point of view and your own then before you know it he made you laugh and you're on the next journey with him. He talked about giving up drugs, Alzheimer's, fame, love, age, death, murder, hatred, music, weight, Manchester, Essex, his wife and a whole lot more. Go and see him while you have the chance - he'll have you on the edge of your seat. We left shocked, worried, yet completely blown away. He's incredible.

This was a classic performance by Dr Clarke with a great mix of his new and old work. He is a thorough professional, works hard and his warmth shines through his act. He was also really funny and this could have been billed as a stand-up routine.

Dr John up to his usual tricks. Very funny & insightful. His guest, Clare Ferguson Walker was also on fine form and eased us in with her witty and poignant verses. All in all, avery good evening in a welcoming venue. I only wish more people would wear a mask.
