There's karaoke, and then there's Pianoke. There really is no comparison. The perfect night out.

There's karaoke, and then there's pianoke. There really is no comparison: singing to a live accompanist is a completely different kettle of fish than standing in front of a small monitor emblazoned with the Sunfly logo.

Grace Note is a wonderful keyboard player, with many years of experience playing with singers, and the selection of music is delightful, including classics not just from the Great American Songbook but also arias from "The Magic Flute", "Die Fleidermaus" and "Carmen". The standard is not too high to scare away the curious, but is good enough to keep the riff-raff away. It was probably the best karaoke-style night I've enjoyed in the capital, and even this reviewer couldn't resist getting up and trying out his version of Piaf's "Ne me quitte pas", as well as "Dream a Little Dream of Me".

The Alleycat is the perfect venue for this curious weekly event and if you are ever at a loss for what to do in the capital on a Sunday evening, I couldn't recommend it highly enough. As well as the entertainment provided by the punters, Grace Note treated us with a live piano accompaniment to the 1922 classic cartoon "Felix in Hollywood", the first animated cartoon to feature Hollywood celebrities such as Charlie Chaplain and Douglas Fairbanks. A real and unexpected treat.

The gents loos could do with a refurb, and the prices of the drinks go up quite steeply after 8 p.m. (ensure you buy enough just before 8, as a bottle of wine increases from £11.95 to over £17 after that time), but other than that this is a perfect night out, and the warmth in the room is palpable. Grace Note is the perfect hostess, and this evening deserves to be better known in the capital. Get yourselves down there soon! You won't regret it.
