This Saturday brings Bugged Out! legend James Holroyd to Manchester for the second Blackout at The Soup Kitchen. We caught up with him for a quick chat ahead of the event.

You're playing at Blackout on 26th November. Are you looking forward to it?

Yes, it's always good in Manchester's basements.

What was it that first got you into the whole music scene?

I've been transfixed with record shops since I was about 11. My mum would get me a single when we went out shopping.

You part formed Bugged out! Did you ever expect it to become so popular?

No, but I had all the timings right. People needed it when it happened.

What has been a highlight (proudest moments) of your career so far?

Obviously doing a good gig is always a great feeling, especially when you have residencies and the crowd all become mates. But also being respected by your peers is good. Getting a City Life award was very nice, and being asked to do Chemical Brothers.

You have toured so much with Chemical Brothers that you are part of the furniture! How has that been?

A total family affair as most of the people involved have been there since the beginning, so it has been an amazing experience to be involved with. Lovely people, travelling etc… 99% highs, although been on stage at Glastonbury was pretty scary.

Is there anyone in particular that inspired you musically?

The Soundsmiths from Sheffield and Detroit, Manchester, New York and Brazil.

Which 'up and coming' acts have impressed you recently?

A lot of friends have killer collections so it's always them. The Basics crew kill it for house, RuffDug, Spandex and co. You still can't touch the big US jocks sometimes. Neil D and PBR on the disco. Moon, Mison, Balearic Mike, Lexx, Move D.

Manchester is hub of activity musically. What do you think draws people back time and time again, either as an artist or as a gig-goer?

It's got the most with it crowd musically in a lot of ways. Bands that play here say that if you can win the crowd in Manchester you can do it anywhere. Unforgiving but also extremely loving.

You've been to some amazing places such as Malaysia and South America. Where has been your favourite destination and why?

Tokyo. It's completely alien to westerners, and people are obsessively into music.

Is there anywhere you have yet to play that you would love?

Sweden.

There seems to be an endless amount of talent emerging and continual new names on the dance scene. As an established DJ, how do you stay on top of your game?

I spend a lot of time  making music as this is a must these days. You can't just be a DJ now, but in a lot of ways it's easier if you are good to spread awareness.

You're known for your huge record collection:

-  What's your current favorite?

Vakula 'Pictures of You',  Wilco 'One Sunday Morning', Begin 'Lay'(sorry).

-  Which record never fails to get a crowd going?

Far too many to list!

-  If the DJ box was on fire and you only had chance to save one record, what would it be and why?

One is never enough.

What's next for James Holroyd?

I just have to take one day at a time.

What can we expect from Blackout next week?

Fun, some musical textures and a couple of drinks.
