Who are Shunt Voltage?

Well we can't give exact details but they are based amongst the hinterlands of Northern Manchester, an enigmatic electronic trio with links to a well-known electronic outfit, Jah Wobble and Factory Records. HQ is 'The Bunker,' a studio complex tucked away somewhere north of Manchester. Their music sits alongside artists such as Wrangler, Lone Lady, Paranoid London and has a strong 'acid tinged dance' vibe. Their first release Scapeism was on Tici Taci records and was remixed by Sons of Slough and Two Mamarrachos (Mexico) and was played out by Andrew Weatherall.

Performances are accompanied by visuals generated by K who served an apprenticeship with underground Manchester Art Collective DOTCA. If you can find them, DOTCA are well worth checking out.

To date Shunt Voltage have most notably played at Subliminal Impulse Festival, Club Solo and The Social London, gaining critical acclaim and offers to play Festivals in 2022. They use a selection of battered old analogue equipment and do their own on stage mixing which results in something different every time they play.

Why the DJ's?

Shunt Voltage's music is highly dance orientated so it's a natural fit to keep the dance vibe going through the use of excellent DJ's. The DJ's are very carefully chosen for their DJ skills and strong selections. More than not they have connections to Shunt Voltage and/or operate within the ALFOS scene originally created by Andrew Weatherall and Sean Johnston.

If you have never been to an ALFOS evening then it cannot be recommended highly enough. They are near mythical nights which invoke transcendence through the power of music, light and dance. Since Andrew's passing Sean has carried the torch forward and played out some spectacular sets including through the ALFOS Emergency Broadcast System which has been a beacon of light during the dark days of lockdown.

The Golden Lion in Todmorden is a legendary venue to catch Shunt Voltage play an intimate show on Saturday 11th December. SV transmission will commence at 9.30pm.
