The UK will be privy to a couple of performances from hip-hop royalty in February as political firebrands Dead Prez play live. The duo, consisting of M-1 and Stic.man, emerged in the late nineties as a chastening alternative to the jiggy era of the genre, dropping viciously acerbic rhymes against blistering often self produced beats.

Discovered by legendary emcee Lord Jamar of Brand Nubian (who helped them sign to Loud Records), their first big track came in the shape of 'D.O.P.E (Drugs Oppress People Everyday)' which was featured on the soundtrack to the film Slam. It kickstarted a juggernaut of hype, which reached stratospheric levels by the time '(It's Bigger than) Hip-Hop' surfaced in 1999.

Everything about the record shook the hip-hop scene at that time to the core, from the bass driven beat to the inflammatory lyrics referencing everything from conspiracies surrounding the death of the Notorious BIG to the ill health of hip-hop as a genre. Even the video (watch above) rallied against the shiny suit bling of the era with a militant afrocentric theme, whilst a different incarnation of the track gave the first spotlight to a fledgling producer by the name of Kanye West.

They then followed that with the widely acclaimed album Lets Get Free, before appearing at various junctures across the Twenty First century as determinedly political artists. Whilst many rappers have forgotten the value of vitriol for political p[urpose, they ahve remained an enduring vision of the power of hip hop, a clear heir to the legacy of the likes of Public Enemy.
