Bart&Baker are two Parisian DJ/Producers, dressed in tuxedos and top hats with house & jazz backgrounds.

What makes Bart&Baker so unique amongst electronic dance music DJs is being the first back in 2005 to mix old vintage samples with new sounds, remixing and reviving old 1920's music, scratching 1940's and 50's tracks and generally making new club music from a vintage source.

In their own words, "we pride ourselves on reinvention, using elements that already exist like vintage music, performance styles and costume to please or uncover the swing music shades of rhythms to both vintage fans and modern kids?.

Bart & Baker have played Festivals (Calvi On The Rocks, Bestival, LoveBox &Tomorrowland) and various clubs throughout Europe. They also have their own monthly residency at the world-famed Parisian club La Machine du MOULIN ROUGE. They have so far released 6 full lengths CD through Wagram Music, including the 3rd, 4th and 5th volume of the Iconic series Electro Swing.

I had the huge pleasure of hearing Bart & Baker scratch their stuff at Prohibition, Manchester in 2016, and they blew everyone out of the water.

I'm a huge fan of their music, and their high-energy DJ sets, a lot of which are available online.

I am very excited to be given the chance to ask Bart the following questions ahead of their return to Prohibition for the Mad Hatters Tea Party this Friday 6th Oct.

We have touched on this a little in your intro, but could you elaborate on what exactly drew you to remixing & reviving vintage music.

"It's our background really. I was Djing house at university and worked at the Moulin Rouge and comes from a dynasty of jazz and classical music artists. We met through record fairs and decided to merge our taste in music."

We all love your signature red & white tuxes & tops. What do you think dressing the part adds to your experience and the experience of the audience?

"Baker invented the Bart&Baker costume as a tribute to the Moulin Rouge. he always thought artist could look at their best in front of the audience. Internationally the costume is a big part of the connection with the audience. Unfortunately in France people tend to not understand the message and sometimes think we try to be snobby."

Do you often find the audience dressing up too?

"It's great to have people all dressed up but we re not trying to force anyone in a dressing code. What is really important is the smile on the face of the audience. "

You played Prohibition, Manchester last year. I was there and I can vouch the crowd hugely enjoyed your set (which is available on Soundcloud - I the listened to it many times since!). What are your memories of that night?

"We really loved playing in Manchester; We thought the audience was great, very open and tolerant. A great mix of clubbers, vintage people and local people."

How do you find the UK crowds?

"We have always thought the UK crowd was open to innovation in the music. Lots of music trends are usually launched in UK first. As for Germany or Belgium they always have a great energy when we play set there."

What is it like playing at Machine du MOULIN ROUGE?

"We produced parties there for almost 3 years. In our opinion it s the only example of party melting vintage people, swing dancers, electroswing addict and mainstream audience. It was free so that was another asset. We had to stop because a lot of swing parties had emerged all around the city and it was not that worth to continue ours or we would have been forced to make people pay."

What has been your favourite event/festival to play at so far?

"As for event we would say the BAL CHARLOT we created in Annecy fo the Imperial Palace. Charlie Chaplin used to come in this hotel and the concept was a bit like the Machine du Moulin Rouge parties. We have already done 2 edition and a third one will happen in 2018."

Are there any events/festivals you haven?t yet played that you dream of playing in the future?

"Without sounding too vain, we have played at all the festivals we wanted to play. Now it s nice to play smaller venue that have a great personnality and obviously iconic places are always a thrill."

If someone is just starting out listening to this style of music, which artists/producers/DJs would you recommend they look up to explore the genre more?

"Parov Stelar is a milestone. So is Freshly Squeezed because Nick aHollywood has managed to gather the best of the genre. Our series of compilation is a good start and the Electro Swing Revolution series too."

A quick two-for-one question: are you looking forward to returning to Prohibition this weekend for the Mad Hatter?s Tea Party and what can we expect to see from you in the near future?

"We're very exciting to be back and it quite emotional considering what happened in Manchester this year. We ll bring love !!! We have a few new tunes too!"

And, finally, where can people find out more about you or listen to your swinging beats?

"Our website links to all the useful content. Our youtube channel has a lot of documents from the vaults and TV appearance and we try to keep our soundcloud account as updated as possible."
