Hackney Council has unveiled a new night-time strategy, aimed at creating a safer and more inclusive Hackney that remains at the forefront of the capital’s nightlife scene.
The strategy, dubbed the Good Evening Hackney plan, outlines how the Council plans to promote Hackney’s thriving nightlife spaces, considered the busiest in London. At the plan’s cornerstone is the safety of night-time spaces, which includes welfare pop-ups in Shoreditch run by the Council’s enforcement teams offering free water, phone charging, and safety equipment, as well as enabling people to have their phones tagged with unique QR codes to easily trace stolen devices.

Other aspects of the strategy include a ‘Hackney Nights’ map to allow residents and visitors to navigate the borough after dark, and attempts to retain Hackney’s status as a nightlife hub by supporting night markets, street food pop-ups, and late-night shopping.
Cllr Susan Fajana-Thomas OBE, the Cabinet member for community safety and regulatory services, said of the plan: “I am proud of Hackney’s vibrant evening and night economy, which has created huge benefits for Hackney – new jobs, more investment, a better range of leisure opportunities for residents, and continually thriving high streets despite a changing economy.
“This new night-time strategy is vital in balancing these opportunities and challenges. It aims to ensure that local residents and businesses are the first to benefit from Hackney’s evening economy and that the borough stays safe, inclusive and vibrant at night.”
