Hackney Colliery Band head to Bristol

Bristol's very own 'Keepers Of The Funk' are hosting east London's unique take on the brass band this Good Friday (18th April) as the Hackney Colliery Band make a long-awaited return to the West Country, taking residence in the city's venue The Lanes.

The Hackney Colliery Band are a phenomenon. Totally acoustic and yet able to blow the roof off any room. The band members have hugely diverse musical backgrounds, which incorporates nuggets of funk, hip-hop and high-octane rock together with a few chunks of Balkan brass, ska and contemporary jazz for good measure - check out their awe inspiring cover of Toto's 'Africa' below for an indication of their delightfully charming sound.

Formed through the desire to play music that appealed to the feet as much as to the ears it stays true to its roots by bringing the tradition of mobile marching bands firmly into the 21st Century, with their musicianship allayed with the immersion of tradition with current cultural context ensuring each performance is unique.

Joining them will be the imaginatively titled Arabian Chisel Technicians. Hailing from Birmingham, the group interweave a diverse melting-pot of dialects and sounds, together with the high-energy, good-time music that is the stamp of Bristol's notorious party-starting crew.
