Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin, guitarist for London rock band Black Midi, has died, aged 26.
Sharing the tragic news on Instagram, Rough Trade Recordings said: “It is with deep sadness that we as a family regret to inform you that Matthew Kwasniewski-Kelvin has died after a long battle with his mental health."
"A talented musician and a kind, loving young man finally succumbed, despite all efforts. Matt was 26 years old. He will always be loved."
Closing the post, Rough Trade signed off: “If you are struggling with mental health issues please reach out to your loved ones or one of the range of charities such as Mind, CALM and Samaritans who provide services and someone to talk to in any time of need.”
Tributes have already begun pouring in from countless Black Midi fans.
Kwasniewski-Kelvin was one of Black Midi’s two guitarists and a founding member of the band, along with Geordie Greep, Morgan Simpson and Cameron Picton.
Kwasniewski-Kelvin performed on Black Midi's debut album, 2019’s Schlagenheim. The band then went on to release 2021’s Cavalcade and 2022’s Hellfire after Kwasniewski-Kelvin had left the group due to his mental health.
The band began an indefinite hiatus in 2024 before the band's frontman, Geordie Greep, confirmed the band had split.
Greep is currently pursuing his solo career, while the band's drummer, Morgan Simpson, has since become a touring and recording drummer for jazz musician Nala Sinephro. Bassist Cameron Picton went on to release music under the pseudonym Camera Picture, later forming the group My New Band Believe.
