Last updated: 28th Feb 2022
Sun, sea, alcohol, and your favourite music live. It doesn’t get any better than that. And if there’s one place you can find this dreamy combination, it’s Portugal.
Known for its reliable weather (more than 300 sunny days a year, if you were wondering), stunning beaches, and lethal festival lineups, Portugal has become somewhat of a mecca for music lovers. Whether it’s EDM, metal, reggae, pop, rock or something entirely different, you can find it in Portugal.
Actually, that’s a bit of an understatement. Portugal is home to some of the world’s best music festivals, from the enormous Primavera Sound to Neopop, the festival that’s on most European electronic music fans’ bucket lists. So if you’re after an unreal festival, Portugal is always a brilliant shout.
Overflowing with unbeatable festivals, at this point, it’s almost impossible to choose between them all. But that’s what we’re here for. So without any further ado, here are the best music festivals in Portugal.
One of the worlds biggest festivals, Primavera, is so popular it has multiple locations dotted around the world. You can attend the iconic festival in Portugal, Spain, the USA, Brazil, Chile, and Argentina. Each year, Primavera Sound curates huge household names spanning multiple genres to create a killer lineup to please every type of music fan. Attendees can enjoy rock, indie, hip hop, pop, electronic, and beyond over three sunny days in the beautiful Parque da Cidade.

Afrobeats, hip hop, RnB, bashment, and dancehall all have that summery vibe about them. So what better place to enjoy them than on a stunning Portuguese beach? Dipping your toes into clear, turquoise waters before hopping on a boat for a party sounds like a dream. And then arriving back to dance to your favourite artists with a cocktail in hand is the cherry on top. If a sunny getaway with upbeat music is your vibe, Afro Nation might be the festival for you in 2022.
If you’re looking for a moshing, headbanging, wall of death inciting lineup, we’ve got just the festival for you. Vagos Metal Fest is one of the biggest metal festivals in the country. It’s grown massively since its first edition in 2016 and will likely only continue to grow thanks to its brilliant lineups, including some well-known artists such as Chelsea Grin, Soulfly, Suicidal Tendencies, Whitechapel, Napalm Death and more.
The worlds biggest hip hop festival has finally arrived in Europe after many successful editions across the USA. Landing on Praia da Rocha beach after two years of pushback from COVID, the festival is looking fire with some of the hottest hip hop acts in music right now. The headliners alone are impressive but Central Cee, AJ Tracey, Flo Milli, Jack Harlow, Lil Uzi Vert, and Ms Banks take the lineup up another level.

Boom Festival is so much more than a music festival. It’s all about peace, oneness, culture, connecting with yourself and your environment and enjoying great music. With a bike village, art installations, performances, the sacred fire space, the dance temple, the alchemy circle and of course the music, it’s impossible to be bored at Boom Festival. Head over to Boom Festival this year to celebrate its 25th birthday and celebrate all the beauty in the world while nourishing your soul.
Replacing EDC Portgual, Secret Project Festival has dropped in with a delicious techno, house and drum and bass filled lineup for its first edition in 2022. As the festival is new to Portugal, we don’t know exactly what to expect, but the organisers will certainly have their work cut out for them. Having said that, the fest is off to a cracking start with such an impressive lineup including Camelphat, Ann Clue, Alan Fitzpatrick, Boris Brejcha, Dom Dolla, Shy FX, and that's not including the huge headliners.
Another legendary festival, Rock in Rio branched out and now has locations in Portugal, Spain and the USA. With such diverse lineups, Rock in Lisboa is the perfect festival for someone with a diverse taste in music. This year, the festival has booked some of the biggest names in rock, indie, pop, hip hop, and new wave as its headliners. And with more names soon to be announced, Rock in Lisboa is likely to be one of the biggest, most diverse festivals in Portugal in 2022.
Finally back for its 15th birthday, Neopop was sadly forced to cancel in both 2020 and 2021, so we’re excited to see it back and better than ever with a lineup that would pique any electronic music fan’s interest. The festival is set to take place over in Viana do Castelo, a coastal town with a Mediterranean climate. Perfect!
Another event that dominates festival season is the mighty NOS Alive. The festival is adored far and wide by locals and foreigners alike thanks to their monster lineups that span across many genres, creating an interesting fest that keeps you on your feet and excited for the next artist. This year is looking as diverse as ever with metal, rock, pop, indie, RnB, electronic, garage, alternative and more.
Now over 25 years old, Super Bock Super Rock is one of the most popular Portuguese festivals. Despite its name, the festival recruits artists from a variety of genres. This years lineup features hip hop artists ASAP Rocky, synthpop band Hot Chip, and indie band Foals. Plenty more artists will be announced soon, so keep your eyes peeled for more updates.

For the first time, Sonar Festival will be landing in Portugal in 2022. Quite different to the rest of the festivals on the list, Sonar Festival is about so much more than music. While there is, of course, plenty of great artists on the lineup, the festival is also about creativity, technology, innovation and providing networking opportunities. But don’t worry, the crowds are still up for it, and most are there for the music.
Portuguese music festivals seem to be getting better and better each year. And after two long, painful years of cancellations, postponements, and rewatching festival videos saved on our phones for the millionth time, we can’t wait to see all these festivals in full swing, drawing huge, eager crowds for a massive party. We’ll see you there.
