Ruckus bring DJ Sneak and Derrick Carter to Middlesbrough

Two of the biggest names in Chicago house hit Middlesbrough in the coming weeks, all courtesy of tireless promoters Ruckus and their quest to bring the best in house music to the North East.

DJ Sneak and Derrick Carter grew up in the wake of a new wave of thinking - a new movement. House had been forged but years before them, limited, confined almost to one city, Chicago. After DJ Sneak had a chance encounter with Mark Farina and Derrick Carter in a club owned by techno and house godfathers Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, the second wave of Chicago house was born.

DJ Sneak - 18th October

DJ Sneak in the Boiler Room

Beginning in the early nineties, DJ Sneak had perfected his skills behind the decks and had turned his attention to producing and eventually spawned his own record label Defiant. His original take on what the first wave of Chicago house producers developed saw him draw in filtered disco samples, along with percussive latin flavours that stemmed from his childhood in Puerto Rico. His influence is still widely felt, undoubtedly inspiring the likes of Basement Jaxx, Armand Van Helden, and even Daft Punk, who name checked him in their track ‘Teachers’ from their debut long player Homework.

DJ Sneak has remained one of the house scene’s constant features, refusing to follow trends and staying true to his original house ethic. His headline slot at the forthcoming 2nd Birthday for Ruckus is eagerly anticipated, as Sneaks own up front, full throttle mixing style and unparalleled song selection skills maintain his status as one of the longest standing true pioneers of house music.

Derrick Carter - 26th October

Derrick Carter in the Boiler Room

Similarly Derrick Carter is a DJ through and through. Allegedly beginning his career at the age of nine, Derrick became one of the biggest names in Chicago’s underground by the time he was sixteen, working at record stores around the city and plugging in to the city’s rich dance music heritage. As a massive part of the nineties new wave of house music born in the windy city, he, alongside Mark Farina, Cajmere and DJ Sneak breathed new life into the reemergence of house music, with a string of no nonsense releases that soon filtered through the city and reached a massive audience in Europe.

To this day Derrick Carter is one of the most iconic figures in Europe, and tours regularly. His record label co-run by Luke Solomon has been responsible for some of the biggest underground house tracks ever, making Derrick something of a tastemaker in his field. With his trademark physical DJing style, full of energy, vibrancy and passion, Derrick Carter is more relevant today than ever, and continues to draw in huge crowds with his authentic Chicago house vibes, that remains as timeless as ever.
