Patterns is for the heads, and the basement says it all. With minimal, neon lighting and a soundsystem that helps you feel all the frequencies, it’s primed for dancing. Upstairs, the terrace gives a view of the iconic shoreline, while the ground floor is a perfect chill-out spot. The programming is excellent, too. Week in, week out, the best selectors from house, techno, disco, garage and jungle grace the decks, making Patterns one of the best clubs in Brighton.

Capacity: 350
Location: 3 Madeira Dr, Brighton and Hove, Brighton BN2 1PS
Walking into The Volks Nightclub is like walking into a drum and bass sanctuary. Over 28 years, the stripped-back, unpretentious club has hosted some of the sharpest selectors, and when you look at the stacks of speakers either side of the DJ booth, you can be sure you’ll feel the bass in every part of your body. Of course, it’s not all about D&B. Expect to hear techno, acid house, dub and hard house from established and emerging artists alongside all the bass. If you like your sounds hard and heavy, this storied institution is exactly where you need to be.

Capacity: 750
Location: 187-193 Kings Rd, Brighton BN1 1NB
They say variety is the spice of life and at Quarters, one of Brighton’s newer haunts, that feels like the guiding ethos. But they don’t skimp on quality. One night, you can walk through the doors and get lost inside soulful house beats and on the next, chest-rattling drum and bass rips through the speakers. Legends like Laurent Garnier and DJ EZ have played under the arches on King’s Road, but there’s also a focus on pushing up-and-coming talent. So, if you’re after a club that keeps you guessing without ever dropping the standard, Quarters is for you.

At club nights like Flavour and Fusion, you can get your dance on, hearing DJs who know how to whip up the crowd into a frenzy in no time. Need a breather? No problem. Brighton is known for being absolutely gorgeous in the hot weather and when the sun shows its face, there’s only one place to be: TIDE. Now, we hear you, the UK is mostly rainy and dull, but that’s not a problem for TIDE. They’ve got an indoor space where they host club nights with a range of DJs, so no matter what season it is, the party is always on.

Club nights at Chalk are absolutely banging. Take Let’s Kill Disco, for example, which is one of the city’s most legendary nights. You’ll hear wall-to-wall party anthems from the ‘80s right through to the ‘00s, so think Madonna, Whitney, Daft Punk, Britney, Darude and Groove Armada. Plus, the drinks are cheap, and we all know you can’t go wrong with £2.50 pints before 12:30. There’s also Fat Poppadaddy’s and Secret Discotheque, which run every week. Whatever your vibe, you’ll walk out into Brighton after a night at Chalk wondering when you can return again.

Horizon is a must for students. With three rooms of music to explore, club nights throughout the week and, of course, great drink deals – you’d be doing yourself and your mates a disservice if you didn’t check it out. Take Pound Disco, for example. Every Tuesday night, you can head down and enjoy £1 entry, £1 Jaegers, £1 beer and £3.50 double vodkas. We don’t think you’ll find better value in the city, to be honest.

DUST is brought to life by the creative minds at Chalk, so you know the club nights here are going to be on point. You can also jump around to your favourite anthems at their indie night, or bust out your best moves to pulsing rhythms at their reggaeton party. There are great drink deals to be had across all three nights, so get down and have the time of your life.

On paper, The Mesmerist is a pub. But it knows how to put on a brilliant club night, and the events are too good to miss. The venue often hosts funk, soul, disco and hip-hop nights where you can get your groove on to something a little smoother than the other options in the city. Their rooftop bar is ace, too. It’s where they hold regular UKG and breaks nights, perfect for newcomers to the scene or people who’ve been listening for years.

If you’re after a club that’s fun, varied and welcoming, Komedia is always a solid shout.

After fourteen years of operation, the Green Door Store is a Brighton institution. Every first Friday of the month, they’ve got a cracking ‘90s v ‘00s club night. But if that’s not retro enough for you, every Saturday, they host It Is Still 1985. It’s an ‘80s night, of course, with all the best bangers of the era from Bowie, Madonna, The Clash and more. There’s also the fantastically named i f***ing hate clubbing, which sounds like an absolute blast.
