Essential Listening: House and Techno

Sliver - KETTAMA remix

We’ve seen grime and hip-hop making their way into drum and bass, now we’ve got grime-infused techno, and it’s an all-consuming addiction. Thinking about it, the combo makes sense. Techno, with its hard, deep sound compliments the fast spitting of award-winning grime MC Novelist.

Straddling the line between raw and euphoric, we’re treated to those glorious build-ups with hard bassy drops. The raves with this one are going to be beyond unhinged.

Essential Listening: Indie and Alternative

Wild Guess - Home Counties

Taken from their debut album Exactly As It Seems, which is due to be released in May next year, Home Countries’ new track is a genre-bending piece, delving into jazzy sounds, indie, jungle percussion, pop vocals, and an overall dancey vibe. It’s not a sound you come across every day.

Weaving a range of emotions into the track, it starts somewhat melancholic before shifting to a more positive sound and then launching into pure fun. With this in mind, it’s even more interesting to hear that vocalist and guitarist Will Harrison said, “It’s about our varied anxieties. We’ve revived and reworked it from an old project, blending in drum and bass influences to reflect where we are musically today.”

Essential Listening: Drum & Bass and Jungle

Life Of The Party - DJ Rap and General Levy

Two legends of the scene link up for a reggae-infused drum and bass banger that is impossible not to get insanely hyped to.

Award-winning multi-platinum artist DJ Rap has been on the scene for years now, crafting incredible tracks across house, DnB, and progressive electronic music, with the majority of her work being jungle. Ragga DJ General Levy brings his instantly recognisable vocals to the track overloaded with the fattest, fuzziest basslines and the most chaotic percussion breaks.

One of those tracks that immediately gets you raving in your seat, this one might just be a modern classic of the genre.

Essential Listening: Hip-Hop and Jazz

Jenn's Terrific Vacation - Danny Brown

A track from Danny’s most recent album Quaranta, Jenn's Terrific Vacation is about the gentrification of Detroit. Get it? Jenn’s Terrific Vacation - gen-tri-fi-ca-tion? We love it.

The new album has already received plenty of positive reviews from critics and listeners, with this track considered a stand-out moment. Danny talks about the drastic changes he sees in his hometown, with quips like “Right there used to be a crack house, Now it's an organic garden.” The music video is incredible too, using metaphors to further explain how rich white people “improve” an area, forcing those who live there to move as rent prices soar.
