DRUMSOUND & BASSLINE SMITH BIO - 2026
The Drumsound & Bassline Smith pedigree runs deep.
As a team, they've occupied a top tier position in the drum 'n' bass scene since the
nineties but the roots were already well established by then. Before the Drumsound
combined with the Bassline, the first chapters of their story were already written.
You see, Simon Bassline Smith had been doing this for years before the team-up with
Drumsound. Coming up in the early eighties heyday of rare groove funk and soul, he's
been intimately associated with the UK underground music scene as it evolved from
soundsystem-led blues parties, to raves, festivals, and mainstream acceptance. And real
heads know about the Absolute2 label, with its string of releases in the pre-jungle rave
days from names like Doc Scott, Ray Keith, and even Orbital. The Bassline Smith
biography stretches through the entire history of hardcore, jungle, and drum 'n' bass.
"Drumsound" used to be a collective of six producers, with the torch now being carried by
Andy Wright. A classically-trained musician with and indie rock background, his musical
influences were already wide and varied before he even started making moves in DnB.
With that melding of styles - reminiscent of the earliest days of rave - perhaps it's no
wonder that, after only a year's worth of productions, the Drumsound crew were able to
catch the attention of already-legendary Simon Bassline Smith in 1998.
Since creating Technique Recordings in 1999, the combined powers of Drumsound &
Bassline Smith have made an indelible mark on drum 'n' bass, and dance music in
general. Scouring the globe for talent, they've helped turn artists like Tantrum Desire and
Document One into household names among DnB cognoscenti as well as bringing the
world music from luminaries like Roni Size, Crissy Criss, Matrix & Futurebound, The
Prototypes, Bladerunner and more.
And their own output has been equally impressive. Regularly played on national radio
stations and championed by influential tastekamers, their huge 'Wall of Sound' album
garnered them two UK Top 40 hits with Utah Saints collab 'What Can You Do for Me?' and
'Through the Night', helping lay the foundations for the boom in mainstream DnB
popularity. Their second album, 'Wardance', saw them return to their underground roots
and take us on a journey through their musical evolution. And more recent output across
multiple labels have gone even further, demonstrating just how many styles, flavours and
influences these veteran producers can bring to the table.
Of course, this success translates into huge demand for Drumsound & Bassline Smith
deejay sets. With a crazy worldwide schedule, including Technique Takeovers for brands
like Let it Roll and Fabriclive, sets at world-renowned events including Glastonbury, EDC
and Rampage, international bookings across North America, Asia, Australia and New
Zealand, those passport stamps just keep on coming. And that's before we even get to
their legendary Derby-based event promotion brand Interface.
Sharp A&R skills that have put Technique Recordings at the top table of drum 'n' bass
labels, regular A-list deejay and radio support for their music, and studio skills befitting
their long experience make Drumsound & Bassline Smith one of the premier acts in bass-
heavy music today.
One of the UK's finest DJ/Producers and co-founder of Formation Records, now celebrating
being the longest running Drum&Bass label on the planet releasing every single year since it’s
inception. DJSS aka Leroy Small is an original breakbeat pioneer who has made an immense contribution to today’s drum & bass sound.
SS is one of the very select DJ / Producers who have been there right from the start, due to the hard work and dedication that he puts into his music and has been recognized universally as a foundation artist who helped shape the entire genre. DJSS is the winner of The 2021 Drum & Bass Arena Hall of Fame Award for career achievement.
It started when the hardcore scene exploded, SS was there and hasn't looked back since. He and his partner Eidris started promoting their own parties called Total Kaos every Friday in their hometown of Leicester. They also put on one of the first large indoor parties at Donnington Park in the summer of 91. It was an amazing success and 6000 people danced till dawn.
DJ SS has an enormous list of tracks and used various aliases. Over the years he’s had countless releases on Formation Records as well as doing remix work for other artists. He has released such tracks as 'The Psycho E.P', 'Rhythm For Reasons', 'Breakbeat Pressure', the Drum & Bass anthem 'Black', with the highlight being ' Lighter' which was Formation Records best seller,
reaching the number 1 spot in the Music Week dance chart and reaching number 68 in the music charts. It is a track that has remained incredibly popular and still continues to be played years on.
Not only has his label Formation during the years had many big tunes released, they have also had many big DJ/producers release records on the label. The list is strong, big and endless including Carl Cox, Grooverider, Shy FX, Ray Keith, Bryan Gee, Frost, Roni Size, Krust, Kenny Ken, Ratty, Matrix, John B, Mickey Finn, Twisted Individual and Distorted Minds.
In between this huge success he has also been the driving force behind some of the finest talent now established within the scene, his most recent sensation arriving in the form of Twisted Individual, who had made a huge impact on the scene with releases on Formation Records and sister labels Reformed and New Identity, as well as his debut album Tooled Up. He has also convinced Zen, old friend of Twisted Individual, to take the plunge and move from London to Leicester to join the Formation team after several releases on 5HQ Recordings and the last couple of years has seen his debut appearance on Formation Records with Minefield as part of the 100th release, and sister labels Reformed and New Identity. Adding to the successful list of a&r projects, DJSS is also responsible for launching the careers of successful artists like John B, Greenlaw, Multi Platinum selling artists Nero, and is continuing onthat path bringing on new blood.
Fast forward to current years and we saw Formation events team up with the UK’s premier event company, Outbreak Festival to host Formation & World of Drum&Bass Arena’s at their massive’s. Simultaneously DJSS has built his World of Drum&Bass brand to become the biggest Drum&Bassevents in Russia averaging over 6,000-10,000 people per show.
DJSS continues to push the boundaries of the events space and the sound in general as Formation has pushed well passed their landmark 200th release and no plans on slowing down anytime soon.
