Possibly the worst gig I've ever been to in all my life. I was expecting a professional attempt at replicating the Martin Scorsese film - what we got was a school-hall amateur production of it. An empty set, cold open-white lights, pound shop costume - if there was any at all - the main guys were just dressed in cheap shiny suits, a half-hearted attempt at a characterising - slipping into Irish accents after two songs, a horn section that had the demeanour of a bunch of deserters who were about to shot by firing squad, shrill empty sound production... The music was okayish - not particularly faithful to the original gig - and the backing singers were recordings. It all just felt a little bit cheap and sad. Like a cross between a good open mic and Vic Reeve's Novelty Island. It was cheap though. It was free. So who am I to complain really? And loads of the older people in the audience seemed to really love it.
