We've got a lot of love for hip hop here at Skiddle, prompting us to put together a Spotify hip hop playlist that has been on heavy rotation in our office. One artist we just had to include on there is Southampton born beat auteur DJ Format.
Having announced his arrival on the scene in emphatic fashion with the now seminal Music For The Mature B-Boy, DJ Format has since become one of the most exciting talents in UK hip hop, regularly combining soul and funk with hip hop nous in a way that consistently delivers. Combining elements prevalent in hip hop's golden age and staying true to its original philosophy, DJ Format has carved a career that has veered between the playful, the broody and the eclectic.
With six albums under his belt (check out his collaboration with Abdominal above), not to mention his critically lauded Fabriclive CD, and his dalliance with 50's and 60's inspired synthesizer soundtrack under The Simonsound guise, DJ format can rightly be called one of the most widely varied, well established, and respected artists in his field.
His most recent work has seen him team up with Phill Most Chill for the wicked 'The Foremost' long player, in which DJ Format's beat driven sensibilities combined with late 80's, early 90's hip hop compositions to create what many have described as both artists finest work to date (below).
As can be heard on his Fabriclive CD, Format matches his skills as a producer with his strength as a live performer. His upcoming headlining slot for Bugalu on April 12th promises to be an exhilarating mix through the worlds of funk, soul, funky, latin, reggae and of course hip hop.
