Mozambique Chopi meets UK Folk. Talking Gigs are really proud to be the first to bring a brilliant overseas talent to Sheffield and, combined with some outstanding local musicians, serve up a delicious fusion of flavours from the UK and Mozambique. Kate Griffin (UK banjo player) and Matchume Zango (Mozambique multi-instrumentalist) are forging a new cross-cultural collaboration celebrating the universal power of traditional music. They both bring echoes of their respective traditions to a vibrant new sound full of world rhythms, contemporary song-writing and joy. Their touring show will feature Matchume’s arsenal of percussion including timbila, xitende, mbira, and congas, Kate’s banjo, and a supporting trio of Evan Carson (Sam Kelly & The Lost Boys, The Drystones) on drums, Ben Evans on Bass, and Ford Collier (Mishra, The Drystones) on low whistle and guitar. The University Drama Studio provides the perfect setting for discovering more about the music with the TalkingGigs format. Combining interview, music and workshop in the first set, with an all music second half guaranteed to get you on the dance floor. The Workshop element will involve Matchume leading the audience in a variety of Tchopo rhythms and song excerpts.
