Tosca is set in a concert hall in an unidentified European state overtaken by civil conflict. Opera singer Floria Tosca arranges a secret meeting with her lover, the painter Mario Cavaradossi, but when the corrupt police chief Scarpia intervenes, the setting changes from music to fear and violence.
Over one night, Tosca is forced to fight for her love, her honour and her life. The opera can be enjoyed on its own, or as a companion piece to Kaija Saariaho’s Adriana Mater as part of a wider exploration of the human cost of war and the resilience of the human spirit. Both operas are part of ENO’s 2026/27 season.
Duration: 2hrs 10mins, with one interval.
Recommended age: 15+. This opera includes depictions of violence, murder, suicide and torture.
