Tosca is an opera set in a concert hall in an unidentified European state overtaken by civil conflict. Opera singer Floria Tosca plans a secret meeting with her lover, the painter Mario Cavaradossi, but the arrival of the corrupt police chief Scarpia turns the setting into a place of fear and violence.
Over the course of one night, Tosca is forced to fight for her love, her honour and her life. The production can be seen as a stand-alone performance, or alongside Kaija Saariaho’s Adriana Mater as part of a wider exploration of the human cost of war and the resilience of the human spirit. Both operas feature in ENO’s 2026/27 season.
Duration: 2hrs 10mins, including one interval.
This opera is recommended for ages 15+. It includes depictions of violence, murder, suicide and torture.
