Romeo & Juliet at the London Coliseum presents Shakespeare’s story as a ballet set in Renaissance Italy, where the Montagues and Capulets are on the brink of violence and Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet fall in love across the divide. It is a retelling of the tragic tale of attraction, conflict and fate, with the action built around Prokofiev’s dramatic score.
Rudolf Nureyev created this production for Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee in 1977. Now in its 50th anniversary, it remains a full-length staging of the story, from first meeting to final loss, with the English National Ballet Philharmonic performing live.
The production has been described by The Telegraph as “as vital, as alive and as stirring as can be”.
