Romeo & Juliet is a ballet based on Shakespeare’s tragic love story, set in Renaissance Italy in the city of Verona. It follows Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet as their love develops against a background of family conflict, with the threat of violence shaping the story’s outcome.
This production was created by Rudolf Nureyev for Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee in 1977. Now in its 50th anniversary year, it remains a stage version built around the drama of the tale, from first meeting to final tragedy.
English National Ballet Philharmonic perform Prokofiev’s score live, adding to the impact of the production’s music and movement.
