Broken By Rock / The Sea Cucumbers / Bruiser
BROKEN BY ROCK
Glasgow’s Broken By Rock deal in melodic, fuzzed-up indie guitar pop, packed with irresistible hooks, wry humour and a healthy disregard for unnecessary polish. There’s a warmth and familiarity to their sound, drawing on the great Scottish tradition of making scruffy guitar music sound effortlessly brilliant. Tunes first, attitude second, and plenty of both.
FFO: Teenage Fanclub, BMX Bandits, The Pastels.
THE SEA CUCUMBERS
Eclectic and sometimes spiky guitar pop from Glasgow, The Sea Cucumbers take the familiar ingredients of indie pop and give them an unpredictable twist. Melodies rub shoulders with angular guitars, offbeat ideas and a willingness to wander beyond the obvious. Their album Good Clean Dirt is a fitting introduction to a band that clearly enjoys doing things its own way.
FFO: The Vaselines, The Wedding Present, The Fall.
BRUISER
Thirty years since Simon last played a Glasgow stage, County Durham’s Bruiser make a long-overdue return to his old stomping ground. A two-piece with the volume and attitude of a much bigger band, Bruiser combine filthy bass riffs, pounding drums and infectious grooves into their own brand of sleazy garage disco-rock. Raw, relentless and just the right side of falling apart, they’re proof that growing old disgracefully can sound pretty spectacular.
FFO: The Stooges, MC5, The White Stripes, Queens of the Stone Age.
