Review of Night Of Ruin

Review of Ruination Festival 2026

fabulous day  Slomatics, Old Horn Tooth and Witchsorrow were the standout bands

Ruination continues to be the best cauldron of slow, heavy and harsh sounds around. A well curated line-up of some of the most monstrous sounding metal around and for a very reasonable price. Things kicked off Friday with the Night Of Ruin (very aptly named given the abundance of shots consumed!) which gave a flavour for Saturday. Sadly, 1968 couldn't make it, but Battalions made a more than worthy substitute. Saturday got off to a good start with Whiskeyhead blowing the hangovers away with their ballsy riff-o-rama. Dark Fighter brought the attack, whilst the ever-excellent TumandoombanD brought the theatre to the baptism of gloom. Warpstormer were a real tent pole act, brash, loud, fast and (thanks to their excellent front man) just a little bit silly (like all the best metal) and really energised the day. Nowt's unrelenting wall of noise gave way to Aluna's textured psychedelia which proved a good lead into Old Horn Tooth's ambient tidal wash. Famyne brought a jerky, technical blast to the sludgy proceedings before we dipped into Hammer horror soundtracks with Witchsorrow. Slomatics closed the day with their pummelling anvil heavy roar! A great day at a great venue (The Underground's new stage set up is great) with the best bar staff, who work hard at keeping the beer flowing and the good vibes coming.

Great music and friendly crowd. Really well organised with band slots running bang on schedule.

Great line up of sludgy, grindy noises at The Underground. Pallid Mask were first up and it took me a bit to get into their choppy stuff, but they were great. Under from down the '62 were good fun. I right old blast of shouting and noise. Finally, Gurt. What a great, great band these are. Big sounding songs with daft song titles are right up my street, so I thought they were splendid. And bought a T-Shirt and album. The Underground remains a good live venue; just needs the owner of the building to look after it a bit better. Staff did well to cope with an impromptu leak from the roof.
