Ah, the Sunday Roast. Much loved, and why wouldn’t it be? Succulent beef, crispy potatoes, flavoursome gravy and meat-free options mean they’re not only delicious, but ticks all the boxes when it comes to preference.

But walk into work, the pub or your flat share asking what the best Sunday roast in Liverpool is and you’ll be met with a hot debate. Your work bestie swears by that one place on Bold Street, your mate loves that modern yet classic take on the timeless British dish, we’re still not sure what that means, and your flatmate won’t eat anything that isn’t their nan’s recipe.

So, to help you swerve all of that, we’ve put together a handy guide to the Liverpool Sunday roasts we think are worth shouting about. From traditional pub settings to European-style meals, you can cut out the noise and make your own choice. Let’s take a look, shall we?

Ma Boyle’s Alehouse & Eatery

Best for: A proper pub roast

When: Sunday: 10am-11pm, kitchen open til 9pm

Where: Tower Bldg, 7 Tower Gardens, Liverpool L3 1LG

Sometimes, only a proper Sunday roast will do. Forget anything fancy, just good old roasties, slow-cooked beef, half a plate of veg and, of course, a massive Yorkshire pud.

And Ma Boyle’s does it tremendously. Better still, its location near the waterfront means you can make it the landing point after a day spent admiring the beauty of The Three Graces. There are meat-free options, too. Ma Boyle’s serves up a veggie lentil roast, which you can get with or without a Yorkshire pudding.

Hawksmoor

Best for: When only a massive bit of beef will do

When: Sunday: 11:30am-9pm, kitchen open til 8pm

Where: 8 Brunswick St, Liverpool L2 0PL

How does a whole rump of slow-cooked, 35-day dry-aged beef served with beef dripping roasties, a Yorkshire pudding the size of your fist and a load of veg sound? Delicious? Yeah, we thought so, too.

You can find this at Hawksmoor every Sunday, and to be honest, with its reputation as one of the places to go for expertly cooked beef, we’d be surprised if its roast was rubbish. Plus, let’s be honest: it’s a bit of an occasion, isn’t it? The grand wooden decor, warm lighting and, of course, the food itself. Come here for a birthday, family catch-up or simply a slap-up meal on a Sunday and leave feeling fully fed and satisfied.

The Welsford Bistro at Liverpool Cathedral

Best for: A Sunday roast with a cracking backdrop

When: Sunday: 12pm-4pm, kitchen open til 3pm

Where: Liverpool Cathedral, Cathedral Gate, St James Rd, Liverpool, L1 7AZ

You might swear that your Nan’s Sunday roast is impeccable. And sure, it might be: we wouldn’t want to upset the lovely scouse nans out there. But is it served in a cathedral that’s over 100 years old? We don’t think it is.

The Welsford Bistro occupies the dining space at Liverpool Cathedral. So, order the roast – with or without meat – tuck in and look up at your lovely surroundings. You’ll see high ceilings, intricate brickwork, and light shining through the stained-glass windows. We’d make a proper afternoon of it. Have a wander around the cathedral, take in the sights and then sit down for a good bit of grub.

Wreck Bistro

Best for: A family feast

When: Sunday: 8am-5pm, Sunday menu served from 12pm-5pm

Where: 60 Seel St, Liverpool L1 4BE

Perhaps the worst thing about a family get-together isn’t hearing that embarrassing childhood story for the thousandth time; it’s the extreme sport of choosing a place where everyone can eat.

Wreck sorts that out. It serves a mean roast with both meat and meat-free options, and here’s the kicker: kids eat free on Sunday. So if your younger sibling, niece, nephew or littlun’s finally want to experience the wonder of a Yorkshire pudding, they can. And, if they’re not quite ready to graduate from chicken nuggets, they’ve still got options. All bases covered, and less of a hit on your bank balance.

The Blackburne Arms

Best for: A cosy Sunday meal

When: Sunday: 12pm-9pm, menu served from 12pm

Where: 24 Catharine St, Liverpool L8 7NL

We reckon half of the appeal of a Sunday roast is the setting. Earthy decor, gentle lighting and the chatter of friends, couples and families enjoying their precious free time before the rat race starts up again.

That’s the Blackburne Arms. You can imagine yourself bringing the whole family here or recharging after a night spent at Liverpool’s many bars. It’s traditional, warm and hearty, so book your table, order your roast and tuck in. You won’t be disappointed.

Schiller's Hall

Best for: When a normal Sunday roast feels a bit too traditional

When: Sunday: 9pm-11pm

Where: 16 Hanover St, Liverpool L1 4AA

We’re not going to lie: being a bit different is fun. You get to be smug about your supposedly superior taste and the fact that you know the unique spots in the city.

So, if going off-piste is your thing, get on down to Schiller's Hall. It’s not been open that long, but it’s already found a way to make its Sunday offering stand out with Schweinshaxe. Or German-style pork knuckle if you’ve been neglecting your Duolingo. It’s a little bit different, a little bit out-there, but very, very lovely.

Neighbourhood

Image: Neighbourhood / Facebook.com

Best for: Bottomless Sunday roast

When: Sunday: 12pm-12am, Roasts served from 12pm-6pm, bottomless for 90 minutes

Where: 62 Castle St, Liverpool L2 7LQ

We love the wholesome feel of a Sunday roast as much as the next person. But sometimes, it’s your birthday, and you need to stretch it right out towards the edges of what’s considered acceptable. If that’s you, get to Neighbourhood.

You get all the hearty goodness of a traditional roast, but with added free-flowing drinks, turning the cosy feel of a Sunday lunch into something much less sensible. Plus, Neighbourhood always has cracking entertainment, so wash your roasties down with a drink of your choice and prepare to be thoroughly entertained.

Best for: Turning Sunday roast into a proper meal out

When: Sunday: 12pm-10:30pm

Where: 16-20 Hanover St, Liverpool L1 4AA

For us, one of the best ways to take the edge off the Sunday Scaries is by going all out on a roast. Not just the meal itself, but a starter and a dessert. Oh, the gluttony.

So, if you fancy that, head on down to Hanover Street Social and treat yourself to a three-course meal for £34.95. It offers a lovely range of food, including Hummus & Chargrilled Pitta, Sticky Toffee Pudding, and, of course, the roast itself. Choose from beef, lamb, chicken, gammon or chestnut and seed, and leave feeling full but happy. And if three courses is too much, you can get two courses for £29.95. Go on, you know you want to.

The Philharmonic Dining Rooms

Best for: Eating your Sunday roast somewhere ridiculously nice

When: Sunday: 10am-10:30pm

Where: 36 Hope St, Liverpool L1 9BX

Don’t despair if the Welsford Bistro is booked up. You’ve got The Philharmonic Dining Rooms as an option, too. Sure, it’s not a cathedral, but it sure is stunning.

With ornate furnishings and lavish-looking chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, there’s tons of history buried in every nook and cranny of the burgundy walls. The food’s great, as well. Come for the Sunday dinner and top-class beer; stay because you’ve discovered yet another elaborate room you somehow missed on the way in.

Ten Streets Social

Best for: A laid-back Sunday roast

When: Sunday: 9:30am-9pm. Roasts served from 12pm-6pm

Where: 8 Regent Road, Liverpool, L3 7BX

Sometimes you don’t want your Sunday lunch to feel like a big occasion. You just want good food, a relaxed atmosphere and somewhere you can properly switch off for a couple of hours. That’s where Ten Streets Social comes in. Its Sunday roast offering keeps things simple, with hearty plates, plenty of the usual trimmings and a setting that feels casual rather than overly polished. It’s the sort of place that works just as well for a catch-up with mates as it does for a slower family lunch. Get your roast ordered, grab a drink and let Sunday move at its own pace.

Go on, treat yourself to a Sunday roast. After all, you’ve worked hard, and we all need something to take the edge off before the week gets going again. And if you fancy heading for a drink afterwards, check out all the best pubs, bars, rooftop bars and things to do in Liverpool too.
