Looking for the best bars on Castle Street? You’ve come to the right place. One of the original seven streets of Liverpool, it’s become famed for its vibrant collection of bars and brunch spots, some of which are housed in Grade II listed buildings and look absolutely stunning.
Whether you’re after a cocktail or two, a big night out, or brunch that turns into drinks, you’ll find the perfect place for you and your mates the next time you plan to visit Castle Street.
MITO Bar
Best for: Cocktails
When: Tuesday – Wednesday: 12pm-12am, Thursday: 12pm-1am, Friday – Saturday: 12pm-2am, Sunday: 12pm-12am
Where: 18 Castle St, Liverpool L2 0NE
Sure, MITO is a small bar. But the cocktails? They’re some of the best on Castle Street. With a focus on ‘Modern Italian Drinking’, it serves up classic Italian drinks and puts a special spin on them.
Take its Negroni, for example. You’ve got the classic version, but then one with cold tea infusions and fresh cordial. And if you don’t fancy drinking your own bodyweight in alcohol, there are plenty of mocktails and alcohol-free options on offer too.
BoBo

Best for: Wine
When: Monday – Thursday: 3pm-11pm, Friday – Saturday: 12pm-1am, Sunday: 1pm-10pm
Where: 46 Castle St, Liverpool L2 7LA
It’s pretty hard to miss BoBo. We reckon a bright orange shopfront will do that, though.
It specialises in Iberian-inspired wine and cuisine, so sample a red from Spain or a white from Portugal. And if you’re feeling really fancy? Order in one of their charcuterie boards and pretend you’re on holiday for a few hours.
McGuffie & Co

What makes date night special? We’d say you need some nice lighting, warm decor and a place you can actually talk. Enter McGuffie & Co.
Originally operating as a pharmacy for over 200 years and reopened as a bar in 2010, it has a cosy, relaxed air, with soft lighting and loads of historic pictures on the walls. As for the drinks, expect classic cocktails, house specials, weird and wonderful infusions, whiskey, wine and beer.
Cactus Bar

Where: 16 Castle St, Liverpool L2 0NE
When you’re out on a Friday or Saturday night, atmosphere is everything. And if there’s one thing we can definitely say about Cactus, it’s that it’s impeccably lit.
Deep reds, yellows and candles give it a warm ambience, like one of those finds you can’t help but gatekeep. You’ll mostly find agave cocktails here, but Cactus also serves a selection of gin-based cocktails and beers. Grab your people, pull up a chair and let the night roll on.

Black Barrel

Best for: Rum
When: Monday – Sunday: 11am-11pm
Where: 6 Castle St, Liverpool L2 0NB
Whether it’s white, spiced, gold or overproof rum, you’ll find it at Black Barrel. Even the cocktails are largely rum-based.
We’re a huge fan of the decor, too. Exposed brick walls, rustic tables and neon signs that give the room an extra bit of character. So, if you love rum or just fancy something different from the norm, Black Barrel is a solid shout.
Castle St Townhouse

Brunch, as everyone knows, is great. But brunch in a Grade II listed building is something to get excited about. That’s Castle St Townhouse for you.
It serves up classics like eggs Benedict and smoked salmon bagels, along with everything from Aperol Spritz to speciality cocktails for you to wash all that food down. Sit outside and admire the movers and shakers of the city, or pull up a chair inside and marvel at the retro-inspired decor that mixes deep greens with groovy patterns.
