Skiddle's Open Goal: A Weekly Roundup of Football news and events
Here we round up the latest Premier League action and bring you the latest footy events added to the Skiddle site.
Last updated: 11th May 2022
The Premier League provided us with plenty of entertainment this weekend, as we entered the final few games. The big news being that Liverpool could only draw with Tottenham, meaning that Manchester City could feel safer if they won their game at Newcastle. Of course, Manchester City were far superior.
Liverpool were left frustrated by a goal from Son before Luis Diaz grabbed a deflected equaliser in a game that Liverpool dominated. It left City in a fantastic position, with Guardiola accusing the entire media of being Manchester United and Liverpool fans afterwards in what was seen as an insane rant. Perhaps he'll be happier when he actually achieves European success.
In other news, Manchester United were completely embarrassed by a brilliant Brighton performance as they lost 4-0 at the Amex. Brighton were quicker, hungrier and more ruthless for the entire game and they resigned United to their lowest ever Premier League points finish. It will be another, now yearly rebuilding job for the club in the Summer.
Arsenal moved closer to sealing a top 4 place by beating a sorry Leeds side 2-1. The Yorkshire club had Luke Ayling sent off in the first half for a bad lunging tackle on Martinelli and almost had three players sent off. But they improved in the second half and played well enough to cause some nerves around The Emirates. The loss plunged Leeds into the relegation zone as Everton managed to beat a woeful Leicester side.
Norwich and Watford's relegation has also been confirmed. They were two sides who lacked any sense of identity all season as they completed their rituals as some of the most frequent yo-yo clubs, frequently promoted and having no actual plans to even bother competing in the Premier League the next season.
Let's hope that it is a long time before we see these sides again because the same old story is getting a bit boring now, especially with Watford who barely seem to give managers more than 7 games to achieve success. Fulham and Bournemouth are returning to the Premier League next season to replace them.
