Santé Interview: The UK has this old rave spirit

We spoke with house music connoisseur Santé ahead of his appearance at Sankeys London on Saturday 10th May.

German wunderkind Santé epitomises everything good about the convergence of high end house music with the underground. The Berlin based producer first came to prominence as the engineer of Tiefschwarz, then going on to gift the brothers a slew of tracks for their label Souvenir with a sound that managed to steer clear of conformity without losing sight of the dancefloor.

He's since added the likes of Cocoon, Defected, Desolat and Rekids to his production CV, at the same time developing a strong reputation for across the board house and techno DJ sets (check his recent guest mix for Pete Tong above) that has seen him a fixture of discotheques from Dublin to Detroit.

This summer he'll be part of the Magna Carta showcases at Sankeys Ibiza, one of the Playa d'en Bossa's newest clubnights set to take place (he first heads there on June 21st). Before that though he returns to one of their other destinations, hitting Sankeys London on Saturday 10th May.

Having played for the club on April 17th the last time they convened for a day and night session at the Greenwich venue, he joins Todd TerryAudiofly, John Dimas, Ramon Tapia and more for the fifteen hour showcase - an event we're running an exclusive ticket offer for.

Ahead of the show we caught up with him to discuss his passion for the UK, upcoming Ibiza dates and his dream three albums to work on.

You're part of the Sankeys London line up on May 10th - you were there at the party in April as well. How well is London's addition of the club going from your viewpoint?

I really love playing in the Uk - you have a great energy here and lot of good lineups. Another thing what I absolutely love is playing at warehouses cause it has this old rave spirit, and Sankeys London captures that.

Have you played for their parties in Manchester and Ibiza? We've seen a few dates for Magna Carta this year lined up.

That's right! We will be doing a few shows with Magna Carta with my label AVOTRE, the home for me and Sidney Charles, and I will also play two shows for Magna Carta at Sankeys Ibiza this summer, I'm really looking forward to this.

On the topic of the white isle why do you think it endures as an eternal party destination? Will you be playing anywhere else across the island?

Yes I will be playing for Viva Warriors, Magna Carta, Reverse and I am pretty happy to have our own AVOTRE parties together with Departue on the island. So back to your question we will see what the future will be with Ibiza, if it is getting more and more commercial it will lose the spirit and there will be other places for the rave community in the future, Croatia for example.

Any other UK dates coming up we can see you at?

As well as Sankeys London I have dates in Maidstone (10th May), Junk in Southampton (17th may), Zeuss Reading (31st May), and Avotre (18th July) and Found Festival (13th September), both London. I can’t´wait to play at them.

Is there any upcoming productions you'd like to let us in on?

I am working on a current collection of tracks for the summer and there will be a Hot Creations EP coming together with Sidney, as well as my new EP on AVOTRE. That will include a Carl Craig remix.

You spent time working as an producer and engineer for Tiefschwarz. How good was it being able to sit in on and assist with the productions they were creating. How rewarding a process is that from a musicians point of view?

It was an inspiring time in the studio for sure. We worked on big remixes for acts like Grace Jones, Hurts and Richie Hawtin.

And finally, still on the same tip. If you could travel back in time and help engineer any three albums from history, which would you pick and why?

I'd pick these three: David Bowie's Space Oddity, Joy Divison Unknown Pleasures (stream below) and Daft Punk's Homework.
