About

Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus is a reimagining of the lives of Antonio Salieri and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The play, brought to life with the music of Mozart, is a tale of jealousy and betrayal…and perhaps even murder.

In the court of the Austrian Emperor Joseph II, Antonio Salieri is the established composer.
Enter the greatest musical genius of all time: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Salieri has given himself to God so that he might realise his sole ambition, to be a great composer. Mozart is a foul-mouthed, graceless upstart who possesses that which is beyond Salieri’s envious grasp: Genius.
However, the court of eighteenth-century Vienna does not recognise young Mozart’s talents – only Antonio Salieri does, and he is tortured by what he hears. He seethes with rage and envy at the genius of this outrageous, flippant prodigy and the sudden awareness of his own mediocrity. Salieri declares war and sets out to destroy the man he sees as God’s instrument on earth.
Peter Shaffer’s award-winning play is a rich, exuberant portrayal of a God-like man among mortals and lives destroyed by uncontrollable jealousy.
