Born in South London, Charlie Dark MBE came up in the early eighties through a world of pirate radio, hip hop, blues parties and the early jazz dance scene, with venues such as Dingwalls at its heart. Forty years on, Charlie has become a pioneering selector of Black music: from his love of dub and sound system culture to jacking Chicago house, the transatlantic disco sound and fiery African rhythms. If there’s a moment that calls for it, Charlie Dark’s probably got the record…
Love To Dance and Milestones are incredibly excited to collaborate in bringing this veteran selector back to Sheffield for a special three-hour set in the intimate surroundings of The System: a brand new, 200-capacity venue run by Apricot Ballroom’s Nonna Fab. The warm OHM sound system is perfect for hearing Charlie Dark’s predominantly vinyl-only sets, allowing him to dig deep into his collection and bring together, as Charlie himself says, “all the forms of music in one room - the way it used to be.”
With sets ranging from the legendary Plastic People to his own Blacktronica parties, Charlie Dark’s musical range knows few boundaries. His skill as a broadcaster on Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide FM introduced him to a wider audience, leading to appearances at We Out Here, A Love Supreme and Giant Steps, as well as sharing the decks with the likes of Mr Scruff, Norman Jay MBE and Mikey D.O.N. His current residency with North London’s Voices Radio continues the tradition of using broadcasting as a vehicle for the positive message at the heart of his music.
A Charlie Dark set is about more than just the music. Charlie is a selector who puts his heart and soul into reading and responding to a crowd, always with a genuine connection to the people in front of him. He is equally comfortable behind the decks or on the microphone, engaging the crowd, unifying the dancefloor and sharing his enthusiasm for music with the room. Come to get your mind opened and your soul uplifted...
Special guest selector Anisa will be joining for the evening, with residents Ash Grimshaw, Sirrey and Mucho Maas warming up proceedings.
