Trading Terror for Souls; The role of the Kirk in the 1649-1662 Haddington Witch Panics
Description:
When examining the role of the Church in the Scottish witch hunts, research has consistently shown that there is no (obvious) financial motive for their “enthusiastic” pursuit of the Devil’s servants. Accounting and financial records show quite the opposite, prosecuting a witch was an expensive affair, but what if following the money can lead us to alternative motive? This talk takes us to 1650s/60s Haddington where we exam the Kirks accounting records to show how the fear of death and damnation was used by the Kirk to gain a treasure far more valuable than money; power.
