Caravaggio is an excellent gateway into the world of Derek Jarman and his beautiful work.
Don't expect linear narrative or a straight biopic. Don't expect straight anything. The familiar faces of Tilda Swinton and Sean Bean are here as newcomers. Entirely shot in a warehouse in London's docklands (now demolished to make way for Canary Wharf) and released in 1986, this is a vital and unique masterpiece of 1980s queer cinema history.
Jarman wrote in his first published journals 'Dancing Ledge': 'Had Caravaggio been reincarnated to this century it would have been as a film-maker, Pasolini.'
