Reviews of St. Marks Church in London

St. Marks Church venue information

Join the Royal Free Music Society Choir and the Hampstead Sinfonietta for a performance of much-loved music by Maurice Duruflé and Felix Mendelssohn. The contrasting pieces are amongst the finest examples of choral and orchestral music of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries.

The choir will be performing Duruflé's hauntingly beautiful and mellifluous Requiem. The work, composed in the 1940s, ranks with Fauré's Requiem as one of the most memorable of French choral compositions. It is inspired by the free rhythms of Gregorian Plainsong and uses pre-existing chants from the Gregorian Mass for the Dead. Joined by Mezzo Soprano, Rose Martin, the choir will perform the Duruflé in the version for harp, organ and chamber orchestra, and will be accompanied by the Hampstead Sinfonietta.

The orchestra will also perform Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture and Scottish Symphony. Mendelssohn's well-known works demonstrate a reserved romanticism, inspired by his visit to Scotland in the 1820s.

All profits from the concert will go to the Helen Bamber Foundation - - a human rights organisation offering support to survivors of cruelty, including torture and trafficking.
