The Seagull at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse is Chekhov’s twentieth-century classic, translated by Rory Mullarkey and directed by Caroline Steinbeis, who return to the venue after Three Sisters. The play centres on an actress, her lover, her playwright son and an aspiring performer, set in a house by a lake.
What begins as a play within a play develops into a story about art, ego and love. It is also Chekhov’s first of his four major plays, and is described here as being inspired by Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
The production brings together the characters and tensions at the heart of the drama, with the curtain call leaving the question of what remains behind.
