The Seagull at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse is Chekhov’s twentieth-century classic, staged as a play within a play. The story follows an actress, her lover, her playwright son and an aspiring performer, set in a house by a lake.
As the action unfolds, the play turns into a story of art, ego and love, asking what remains when the curtain falls. Caroline Steinbeis and Rory Mullarkey, who worked on Three Sisters at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, return as director and translator.
This production is based on one of Chekhov’s four major plays and is presented at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.
Key facts: The play features suicide and animal cruelty, with references to child bereavement. Children under 3 do not require a ticket.
