The Seagull at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse is Chekhov’s twentieth-century classic. Set in a house by a lake, it follows an actress, her lover, her playwright son and an aspiring performer as a play within a play becomes a story of art, ego and love.
Inspired by Shakespeare’s Hamlet, it is the first of Chekhov’s four major plays. Caroline Steinbeis directs and Rory Mullarkey translates, returning to the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse after Three Sisters.
Key facts: This production features suicide and animal cruelty, with references to child bereavement.
