The Seagull at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse follows an actress, her lover, her playwright son and an aspiring performer in a house by a lake. What begins as a play within a play becomes a study of art, ego and love, asking what is left behind when the curtain falls.
Caroline Steinbeis and Rory Mullarkey, who previously worked on Three Sisters at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, return as director and translator for Chekhov’s twentieth century classic. The Seagull is the first of his four major plays and is inspired by Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
