The Seagull at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse is Chekhov’s twentieth-century classic and the first of his four major plays. It centres on an actress, her lover, her playwright son and an aspiring performer, set in a house by a lake.
What begins as a play within a play develops into a drama about art, ego and love. The story unfolds towards the question of what is left behind when the curtain falls.
Inspired by Shakespeare’s Hamlet, this production presents Chekhov’s play as a tightly drawn look at relationships, performance and ambition.
Key facts: Caroline Steinbeis and Rory Mullarkey return to the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse as director and translator.
This play features suicide and animal cruelty, with references to child bereavement. Children under 3 do not require a ticket.
