The Seagull at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse is Chekhov’s twentieth-century classic, directed by Caroline Steinbeis and translated by Rory Mullarkey. It follows an actress, her lover, her playwright son and an aspiring performer at a house by a lake, as a play within a play begins to unfold into a story of art, ego and love.
Chekhov’s first of his four major plays, The Seagull is also inspired by Shakespeare’s Hamlet. As the story develops, it asks what remains when the curtain falls.
Caroline Steinbeis and Rory Mullarkey return to the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse as director and translator, after their work on Three Sisters at the venue.
