The Seagull at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse brings Chekhov’s twentieth-century classic to the stage in a production directed by Caroline Steinbeis and translated by Rory Mullarkey, following their work together on Three Sisters.
The play centres on an actress, her lover, her playwright son and an aspiring performer, set in a house by a lake. What begins as a play within a play develops into a story about art, ego and love.
Inspired by Shakespeare’s Hamlet, this is the first of Chekhov’s four major plays.
