The Animals Come to the Table at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse is the world premiere of a new play by Timberlake Wertenbaker, written for the candlelit venue. It begins with a secret emergency meeting, as the lights go out and humanity is summoned to the negotiating table.
A negotiator and an interpreter are met by a chicken, a rat, a snow leopard and an army of voices from the natural world. They are there to demand an end to exploitation and ecological destruction, creating a play that brings politics, wit, philosophy and mischief into one confrontation.
Wertenbaker is one of the UK’s leading playwrights, and works including Our Country’s Good, Jefferson’s Garden, The Love of the Nightingale and Little Brother are studied and performed worldwide.
