The Animals Come to the Table is a world premiere at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. Written for the candlelit venue by Timberlake Wertenbaker, it places a negotiator and an interpreter at a secret emergency meeting with a chicken, a rat, a snow leopard and voices from the natural world.
The play imagines a moment when nature answers back, as the animals demand an end to exploitation and ecological destruction. Wertenbaker’s work includes Our Country’s Good, Jefferson’s Garden, The Love of the Nightingale and Little Brother, and it is studied and performed worldwide.
Bringing together politics, wit, philosophy and mischief, the production presents an unusual confrontation between humanity and the wider natural world.
