The Animals Come to the Table at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse is the world premiere of a new play by Timberlake Wertenbaker, written for the candlelit theatre. The story begins when a negotiator and an interpreter are called to a secret emergency meeting, where a chicken, a rat, a snow leopard and other voices from the natural world are already waiting at the table.
As the play unfolds, it imagines a world in which nature answers back, demanding an end to exploitation and ecological destruction. The piece brings together politics, wit, philosophy and mischief in a story about stepping into someone else’s shoes.
Timberlake Wertenbaker is one of the UK’s leading playwrights. Her work includes Our Country’s Good, Jefferson’s Garden, The Love of the Nightingale and Little Brother, and is studied and performed worldwide.
