The Animals Come to the Table plays at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. This world premiere from Timberlake Wertenbaker is written for the candlelit venue and imagines what happens when the natural world is brought into a secret emergency meeting with humanity.
A negotiator and an interpreter are faced with a chicken, a rat, a snow leopard and an army of voices from the natural world, all demanding an end to exploitation and ecological destruction. The play brings together politics, wit, philosophy and mischief in a meeting that is funny, furious and unsettling.
Wertenbaker’s other works include Our Country’s Good, Jefferson’s Garden, The Love of the Nightingale and Little Brother, and her plays are studied and performed worldwide.
