About The Animals Come to the Table

The Animals Come to the Table at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse is the world premiere of a new play by Timberlake Wertenbaker. Written for the candlelit theatre, it begins when the lights go out and a negotiator and an interpreter are summoned to a secret emergency meeting.

Waiting for them are a chicken, a rat, a snow leopard and an army of voices from the natural world. The play imagines a confrontation over exploitation and ecological destruction, with politics, wit, philosophy and mischief driving the action.

Wertenbaker’s work includes Our Country’s Good, Jefferson’s Garden, The Love of the Nightingale and Little Brother, and is studied and performed worldwide. This new play is presented as a bold response to the question of what happens when nature answers back.
