About The Animals Come to the Table

The Animals Come to the Table is a world premiere at the candlelit Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, written by one of the UK’s leading playwrights, Timberlake Wertenbaker. It asks what happens when nature takes the floor: a negotiator and an interpreter are summoned to a secret emergency meeting, where they are met by a chicken, a rat, a snow leopard and a chorus of voices from the natural world.

The play brings together politics, wit, philosophy and mischief as it imagines a moment in which humanity is confronted by demands to end exploitation and ecological destruction. Wertenbaker’s work includes Our Country’s Good, Jefferson’s Garden, The Love of the Nightingale and Little Brother.

The production is described as funny, furious and unsettling, and it is presented as an audacious experiment in stepping into someone else’s shoes.
