King John is Shakespeare’s rarely performed play at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, an intimate, candlelit setting. The story begins after the death of Richard the Lionheart and follows John as he steps into the role he claims the right to and tries to rule England.
As John attempts to define himself beyond his brother’s shadow, his reign is marked by chaos, turbulence and power struggles across nations. Olivier-nominated director Jaz Woodcock-Stewart, known for Paradise Now! at the Bush Theatre, makes her Globe directorial debut with this production.
