King John at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse presents Shakespeare’s rarely performed masterpiece in an intimate, candlelit setting. The play begins after the death of Richard the Lionheart, when John must step into the role he claims the right to and attempt to rule England.
As John seeks to secure the crown, the story follows the chaos, turbulence and power struggles that spread across nations. His rule is tested as he is driven to go to any lengths to maintain control. Olivier-nominated director Jaz Woodcock-Stewart, known for Paradise Now! at the Bush Theatre, makes her Globe directorial debut with this production.
Key facts: Suitable for all ages, but the play features violence, death, including child death, and depictions of war.
